WHO IS NIELSEN?
Nielsen Media Research is a research company that gathers audience data on TV shows and other media. Their audience measurement largely determines what viewers see (or don't see) on TV.
WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?
For the U.S. Latino market, Nielsen uses a complicated, language based method that was developed several years ago in collaboration with Spanish language TV.
This method has been proven inaccurate by several third party researchers and is much criticized because it does not take into account the role of NATIVITY (U.S. born / Non U.S. born) plays in TV viewing, leading to the erroneous notion that most U.S. Latinos only watch Spanish language TV.

HOW DOES THIS IMPACT ME?
The Nielsen numbers just don't add up and the result is too few Latinos on English language TV. This under-representation leads to damaging stereotypes and an industry that caters almost exclusively to Spanish language TV and few shows featuring Latinos developed for mainstream TV.
Its very suspect that a multi-billion dollar research company can go into great detail about several things (including country of birth for immigrating Latinos such as Peru, Colombia, Mexico, etc.) but NOT NATIVITY (U.S. born or Non U.S. born).

WHAT DO WE WANT?
A better, more accurate and fair system that does not lead to stereotypes on TV! Why can't Nielsen account for U.S. born Hispanics, which is by far the most important factor when determining television viewing habits?

HOW HAS NEILSEN RESPONDED?
Unfortunately, Nielsen has responded with denial, broken pledges and even laughing at this serious issue:
- 2005: YOU'RE CRAZY! Shrilly defending the old and current language based system by lashing out at HCTV founders and critics.
- 2006: LET'S TALK! Reversing positions, they then pledged to commission independent research on the U.S. born issue and report those results by summer 2006.
- 2007: I DIDN'T SAY THAT! Nielsen never followed through with their 2006 pledge with one Nielsen executive present at the meeting denying it ever happened.
- TODAY: HA, HA! Nielsen Sr. VP of Hispanic Services, Doug Darfield (a former Univision employee), laughed at the issue in an industry trade interview (see below).

WHAT DOES NIELSEN SAY?
Below are some notable published quotes from Nielsen's "professional" spokespersons.
(Rose) "_should produce good programming that all Hispanics will watch_"
Jack Loftus, Nielsen Media Research in Mediaweek 11.10.05
HCTV RESPONDS: Why should ALL Latinos watch just one type of programming? Latinos are people with diverse interest and taste, just like everyone else? The fact that Nielsen makes a statement like this is concerning.
"I can't stress to you how not important I think this is. [Laughter]" AND " It is not going to change anything. [Laughter.] This is one of history's greatest tempests in a teapot, and I give kudos to old what's-his-name there for stewing up the industry about absolutely nothing."
Doug Darfield, Sr. VP of Hispanic Services, Nielsen Media Research in MultiChannel News' Hispanic TV Update 4.4. 07
HCTV RESPONDS: Perhaps it is not important to Mr. Darfield because he doesn't have to live with the consequences of his company's inaction. We assure you, it's no laughing matter to be portrayed as drug dealers, gang bangers, maids and gardeners.
